Training for Brecca (swim 8k run42k) and Ironman Barcelona

So having had two failed attempts at breaking 20 minutes for 5k it's time to start training a bit longer with Brecca on September 9th and Ironman Barcelona at the end of the month I haven't done a huge amount of long distance stuff. I was loosely following the Trainerroad plan on my turbo trainer. So it's broken down into 8 week blocks and it generally involves doing an FTP test at the start of each block. Failed attempt 20:50

      So my last attempt at breaking 20 minutes for 5k ended up in failure. The training had gone ok leading up towards it, certainly had gone better than the previous 6 week block where I wasn't really hitting the times.  We were lucky to have Dom Horan pacing us out. I was amazed at how easy the first 500 meters felt. I think the last time when myself and Declan did it we did the first 500 meter in about 1:45 but this time I'd say we were bang on 2 minutes and it made a difference....

Two weeks left till final 5k attempt.

So I've two full weeks left until I give this sub 20 minutes for 5k a final bash. I have to concentrate on longer racing as I've Ironman Barcelona and Brecca Jersey coming up. So this week the Interval session was a toughie. I had 3k warm up and then two k's at sub 4:15 per k (so moving for me) then 1 minute hard 1 minute easy and then 1k had to be sub 4 mins at the end. I was hoping to do it with Declan Hogan but the pull of the Horse and Hound was too strong...

Aquathon Race report

I always feel like the summer has started when the first Aquathon on Bray seafront takes place. There's three of these races and they basically fall in the middle of each of the summer months. The previous weeks training wasn't great in that I just couldn't hit the times on the intervals that I needed to hit.    So was told by coach Gary to run the first lap really hard, and see where you're at after that. I sort of knew it just meant race hard because it's not like you're going to slow up on the second lap....

Struggling to hit those times.

  So for my last attempt at breaking 5k I prob didn't spend too much time worrying about what actually splits I was doing but this time I'm paying a lot more attention to the times, and they're not great. For example Thursdays session was a 3k time trial to see where we are at. Ideally I should be able to at least run 3k in under 12 minutes at this stage.
